Our Barristers provide excellent advice and advocacy in all matters.

Brian Knox SC practices mainly in the family law/family provisions areas of the law. That includes court work at all levels: appellate hearings, trial and interim/interlocutory work as well as conducting mediations.

He was appointed Senior Counsel in 2002.

Brian has worked in most areas of the law for over 30 years as a solicitor, barrister, Managing Lawyer (previously the Principal Registrar of the Family Court and then Australian Government Solicitor for NSW), Crown Prosecutor, Judge.
Prior to that and particularly over the last three years he has also been a mediator specialising mainly in Family Law and Family Provision/Succession Act matters. He is recognised and respected as a senior practitioner with vast experience in a variety of human and legal problems who adopts a practical no-nonsense approach.

After academic studies with arts and law degrees from ANU and a Masters from Harvard University, Brian’s training in mediation and alternative dispute resolution was through LEADR, Harvard and Bond Universities and accreditation through the NSW Bar Association.

In terms of mediation work, the details in this website may assist you in making your decisions about mediation and approaches to resolving any dispute you may be involved in – particularly in those areas – and whether he is the mediator for you.

Mediation is a changing field with different approaches and needs training grounded on practical experience in the relevant area of law. It very much requires a personal and practical approach. Problem areas of personal relationships can be particularly difficult. Parties often need assistance to try to resolve issues ahead of court hearings and other stages in the litigation process. That is particularly important for those attempting to avoid the costs, delays and tensions associated with litigation and the emotional, financial and other demands of such cases.
